Does Corfu Need CDR?
Why do the donkeys need our help?
Do we need a donkey charity in Corfu?


Many of the donkeys on Corfu are happy healthy donkeys with kind and responsible owners who love them. They care for them whilst they are working and continue to care for them in their retirement, having grown too old to work.
We would like to think that they all lived this way, but unfortunately it is not the case. Many live a decent life until they are no longer needed or can no longer work, then some owners do not know what to do with their donkeys and abandon them.

Here we see donkeys being cared for, living a working life, having their feet trimmed and being treated with respect.

 

But what becomes of those poor neglected donkeys ?

We are not talking about animals farmed for meat, but animals that have worked hard all their lives for their owners. Animals that are part of Greece's heritage, part of the culture that Greeks and foreigners alike remember fondly. Let this not be lost forever.

  

Many donkeys are neglected, some through ignorance some deliberately. Many are just abandoned when they have outlived their usefulness.
Some unwanted donkeys are sold or exchanged to dealers.
Others are transported to Italy to the slaughter houses - many die en route.
