Sirus, also known as Bear, was destined for the meat market in Italy. We took her in at the last minute. She has difficulty getting up in the mornings due to an old injury in her pelvis. She also has arthritis in one knee. With daily medication and care she is up and running very quickly. Once on her feet, nothing stops her from enjoying life to the full.
Avrio was saved from the dealers by a resident. Unfortunately, he couldn't keep her and gave her to the shelter. Avrio is very old and is now totally blind. However, this courageous little donkey holds her own and lives for her three good daily meals. The incredible noise she makes when hungry ensures we never forget feeding time.
Ira is a healthy, beautiful 18 year old, with her whole life ahead of her. She broke her leg during transportation and was consequently sent to Corfu Donkey Rescue. After six weeks in a splint, her injury healed. She will always have a bad limp but is perfectly capable of taking care of herself. She will have to remain at the shelter.
Shine was rescued in October 2005. She is completely blind. After six months of integration, she lives happily amongst our family of donkeys at the shelter and enjoys her own private stable at night. Shine will spend the rest of her life with us as any journey would be too stressful for her.
Zois was abandoned on the roadside. She had a severely injured and infected hoof. It was not thought she would recover. After a year of treatment this stoical donkey is in good shape. Despite her disability, she is a contented donkey who can run like the wind when she takes a mind.
Cloud was brought to the shelter in 2005 with the most appallingly long and twisted feet. She could barely walk. After one year of periodic foot trimming and the invention of a temporary plastic hoof, Cloud is almost able to walk normally. A very shy donkey she finds comfort and confidence from her best friend Ira.
